Danger Close: Advancement

Continuing coverage of Danger Close, today we present the rules for how your character changes. Advancement isn’t Experience. Remember that and Enjoy.

Advancement

Jason Borne is always a bad ass. But between movies he uncovers his past, makes new friends and contacts, gets new gear, and changes. A lot. Sure, James Bond is always James Bond. But his gadgets change from movie to movie and he has an ever-changing list of babes to use and abuse. While this might not be the traditional definition of Advancement in games, it is a type of Advancement. Before, after, or during a session Operations has a chance to award Advancement Points to the Agents. Agents can, in turn, spend these points on a variety of things to effect the game and their characters. When Advancement Points get handed out and can be spent is up to Operations.

There is one standing rule for all Advancements. You can not change anything more than one point between\during a game session unless Operations says so. The costs for Advancement is the same as the costs during character creation. We’ll re-print them all there for you though. Don’t worry about having to go digging around.


Areas

You can not spend Advancement Points on Areas. Your Areas never get better… but it can change. You always have thirty points to spend on your Areas and between games you can adjust Areas up or down one point. For example: You can move a Rank 5 Area to Rank 4, giving you 1 Area point, move a Rank 3 Area to Rank 2, giving you 3 Area points, and then move a Rank 1 Area to Rank 2, costing you 4 points. Remember, one point change between sessions. That’s it. Remember, you are always considered to have thirty points to spend on Area regardless of what you currently have spent.

Again. You can NOT spend Advancement Points on Area.

Traits, Assets, Equipment, and MICE Attributes

Traits, Assets, Equipment, and MICE Attributes (Money, Ideology, Coercion, and Ego) all cost the same, Advancement Points equal to the Rank you’re bringing the Traits, Assets, Equipment, or MICE Attributes (Money, Ideology, Coercion, and Ego) to. Like everything you can’t increase Traits, Assets, Equipment, or a single MICE attribute more than one point between sessions but you can increase each by one point, just not the same thing twice… unless Operations says you can.

Advantages

Advantages cost a number of Points equal to the Double the Rank of the Advantage. Advantages are listed one of three ways, a Single Rank, a Ranged Rank, and a Double Rank. Single Rank Advantages are simply bought at double their single Rank cost. Ranged Rank advantages must be bought in succession, paying for Rank 1 before Rank 2 and so forth. Double Rank Advantages must also be bought in succession but you don’t have to buy any ranks in the middle of the two listed Ranks. Again, you can not increase an Advantage more than one point per game session.

Agent Points

You can always opt to convert your Advancement Points into Agent Points at a 1:2 ratio. Every Advancement Point gives you two Agent Points. Conversely, you can convert Agent Points into Advancement Points at a 2:1 ration. Every two Agent Points give you one Advancement Point. Unlike everything else you can convert more than one point of AP to MP and vice-versa.


Intel

During Intelligence Gathering you can spend any Advancement Points you have to create, increase, or decrease Intel as if they were Wagers. For every point of AP you spend you get a point of Intel to spend like normal. Before you ask, yes you can convert Agent Points to Advancement Points and then create more Intel. It’s costly but feel free.


Plots and Missions

You can create a new plot or determine your next Mission by spending a single Advancement Points. You are allowed to say one sentence without any conjoining words (and, but, etc) and that become part of the current story or the next Mission. Operations has Veto power over this suggestion, and if the suggestion is vetoed then the Advancement Point isn’t spent.
