Dear Diary…

Left Friday night to go to DrakeCon, shut down my laptop and left it on my desk. Had a fantastic time at the con, but that is a story for later. Came home and my laptop wouldn’t boot to windows. Took it over to my brother, started running through all the tests, pulled out the hard drive and listened to it click. Shit fuck crap damn. Everything is on that drive. A couple months ago my backup drive went out and I hadn’t had the time to replace it yet. The last three years of work are lost. Gone. Most of it is still alive and well on the internet. Some of its not. I’ve lost all my source files for AYTJ?, Bear Swarm!, and some other projects I’m not talking about yet. This means all the card design I had for AYTJ? is gone, I have to start fresh. All of our music cuts for Bear Swarm! are gone along with the raw audio. I’m going to have to re-do all of it. Luckily I have next Mondays episode safe on my iPod so Bear Swarm! won’t miss a beat. This hurts. Years of work just gone with a simple click.

I’m at work now, luckily I work for a computer retailer and repair shop. My laptop is in the other room right now getting a new (much larger and faster) hard drive and Windows 7 (was using XP) so I guess I’m moving up in the world. The techs are going to see if they can’t salvage my old hard drive but I’m not hopeful. I’d rather be crushed now and start dealing with this shit then hold out hope and never get my work back. Anyway, this is really only a small setback. Most of my stuff is safe online and for the fans everything should proceed as planned. At least this has kicked my ass to get my home desktop back up and running as my backup machine again.

Update: It turns out that one of my coworker’s hobbies is data recovery. The dude is a DR magician. I might be getting the majority of my work back. We’ll see whats corrupted and gone later… if I even get 10% back I’m going to be very very pleased.

Update 2: Electric Boogaloo: As of now, it appears I have 100% of my data back. My heart is lifted and a sense of rightness has been restored to the world.

I wanted to blog about something personal today. A brief anecdote of my daily life that amused me. I debated setting up a livejournal, then I remembered that years ago I used to have a deadjournal. For those of you who don’t know, its a Goth livejournal clone. I tracked it down, read a few entries, then deleted it. I also found out I had a blog before that one… that I promptly deleted. I also found an old website I used to run… deleted.

All of this serves to remind me of what a total douche I used to be. Old me disgusts current me. Odds are good the future me will hate current me too. All of this also made me decide to NOT open a livejournal and NOT get into personal blogging. Its too easy to look back and remember what a tool you were. Some memories are better left forgotten. It also reaffirms my desire to leave this a personal work blog and not a place to blog about my personal life.

One might say, “But Rob, isn’t THIS a personal post?” to which I would explain, “While to a unwashed heathen, such as yourself, it might appear as such it is actually a comment on the status of this blog and its intended purpose.” I might also kick that person just for an exclamation point to my comment. Consider yourself kicked.

Automata: ClickWise

Automata: ClickWise is a campaign I’ve prepped to run ever since the Penny Arcade comics were created. The setting was captivating, genius. I’m planning on cross-posting the things I’ve written on Obsidian Portal here. In case I ever destroy that portal, I’ll still have a copy of the work I’ve done. Before the break I’ll give you a taste of the character pitch, what the game is meant to be about. Then after the break you’ll find the write up for where the story is at and the rules for the game. Automata uses the Fudge system. Fudge is available free for download by following this link . Since Fudge is a fully customizable roleplaying game it seemed like a natural fit.

All characters are Detectives working for the ACI Division of the Metropolitan Police Department. As such, every character has done something undesirable and was sent to work with the ACI Division. The exact infraction is something minor, nothing that would get you bounced from the force entirely, but is otherwise left up to the player to decide. The What We Know section documents all the information released officially by Penny Arcade about the world of Automata. It’s suggested you at least read the comic before beginning play.
